A design hotel in Lisbon

The Altis Avenida Hotel Lisbon was our selected home while staying in Lisboa in March 2017, a great time of year to visit the highly enjoyable and bucolic portuguese capital.

The hotel sits right in the middle of the city’s cornerstones, making it an ideal exploration base from which to explore the city’s distinct neighborhoods, spread across 7 challengingly steep hills. Nestled in a well refurbished yet fully respected 1940s building, Altis Avenida impresses by its chic, sophisticated style, which all comes down to its tasteful details and the highly cosy feel of its Art Deco atmosphere rather than the in-your-face bling bling of some 5* hotels. While the lobby itself is not majestuous in itself, the rooms, while not being very large, are the lush cocoon you would expect from these standards. The golden, black and wooden tones give a characteristic tribute to the fine Art Deco style. The amenities are all you would expect with an espresso machine, a safe, a small room fridge. Special mentions to the night-time sleeps, with 1) the large, smooth bed and pillows and 2) the full electric shades, for total darkness… make sure to wake up before breakfast ends though !

An outstanding rooftof

Which brings to one of the hotel’s highlights : the last floor’s Rossio, a restaurant, bar and terrasse serving breakfast through late-nigh dinner. Overlooking Avenue de Liberdade, Praça dos Restauradores and the magnificent Rossio station, this luminous and impressive spot will make breakfast one of your day’s highlights. The breakfast itself is a healthy mix of juices, fruits, pastries, as well as cheese, charcuterie and other salty options for the brunch-like goers. The only bad point would go to the coffee, which we think does not meet the quality standard of the rest.

Finally, being a guest at Altis Avenida will give you exclusive access to the facilities of the other Altis hotels in Lisbon (Altis Grand, Altis Belem), to enjoy some of the facilities that may otherwise be missing from Altis Avenida: indoor and outdoor swimming pools, spa, gym,… We especially recommend a trip to both the spa and outdoor pool of Altis Belem, which overlooks one of the best views of the Tagus in town !

Wrap-up :

Cannot-beat-it location, stylish Art Deco atmosphere, highly cosy and classy rooms plus a rooftop eat & drink spot all make the Altis Avenida a great 5* destination to your stay in Lisbon, emphasized by the special access to other Altis hotels in town.
Note: this review was written while the hotel management was carrying out a large extension of the hotel inside the same building, which may bring new features to it on the near future.
